What Child is This? The Name of Jesus Reveals Who He Is and Why He Came

God’s only begotten Son, the child in the manger, has a name! We readily take names for granted: our own names and the names of others. A name becomes so much a part of us that it is hard to imagine having another name. My older sister likes to remind me that she had other colorful names picked out for me during my mother’s pregnancy. As humorous as it would have been if one of her suggestions would have stuck, my name is what it is. This is true as well with the Holy Child. What does it mean that the Christ Child’s name is Jesus? As outsiders to the Jewish world, the curious magi might have wondered what that Hebrew name meant. It means quite simply that the LORD God has come to save.

As we celebrate the Solemnity of Epiphany this weekend and close out the Christmas season with the commemoration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (this year Monday, January 8th) perhaps we could make our own the sentiments of the Litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. It is a remarkably powerful prayer which highlights all the richness and manifold grace that is contained in the saving name of Jesus. As the Catechism beautifully reflects “But the one name that contains everything is the one that the Son of God received in his incarnation: JESUS…The name "Jesus" contains all: God and man and the whole economy of creation and salvation” (CCC 2666). Christ came to save; His Holy Name expresses that truth perfectly! This past Wednesday, January 3rd was the Feast of the Holy Name. To the right is an excerpt of the Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus, which is available in many prayer books and online in its entirety. The name is a prayer. What’s in a name? As it turns out, everything!

I would like to welcome to our parish Madeline McNeil, a recent graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati who begins this coming week as our Administrative Lead and Communications Manager at the front desk of our parish office. Our parish staff has really risen to the occasion! Thank you for your patience with us in this time of transition. I am grateful for Madeline’s willingness to join us in our mission.

Congratulations are due to Fr. Jules Omba Omalanga as he celebrates his silver jubilee of priestly ordination. Fr. Jules moved this summer to Holy Cross Rectory. He is a dedicated example of priestly service in his assignment as chaplain for the University of Minnesota Hospital and the francophone West African community at St. Boniface. Ad multos annos! As you see him around the Holy Cross campus please congratulate him on 25 years of priesthood!

Blessings to you and your loved ones in this New Year. As the Christmas season comes to a close may you continue to abide in gratitude for God’s gift of His Son!

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Howe
